POSSIBLE eARLY SIGNS OF AUTISM: BETWEEN 3 AND 12 MONTHS OF AGE

Autism is a complex developmental condition that affects communication and social skills. If we pay attention to how a baby is reacting or not to the social variables in its environment, we can note possible warning signs during the first year of life.

At 3 months, some possible signs are:

  • Does not follow moving objects or people with his gaze
  • Doesn’t keep his eyes on dad / mom when they move in his field of vision
  • Does not react to loud noises
  • Does not grab and hold-on to objects
  • Does not smile when others smile at him
  • Does not babble
  • Doesn’t pay attention to new faces

At 7 months of age, some possible warning signs are:

  • Does not turn his head to locate where the sounds are coming from
  • Does not laugh in front of the smile of others
  • Does not reach you or give objects
  • Not trying to attract attention through actions
  • Show little interest in games like peekaboo (cuckoo)

Certainly at 12 months of age, the following characteristics should be considered an alert to seek the opinion of a professional and initiate an early intervention program at home:

  • Doesn’t crawl
  • Does not stand with or without help
  • Doesn’t say single words
  • Does not use gestures such as nodding or saying no with his head
  • Does not point to objects or images

We know quality early intervention is the best prognosis. If you have noticed any of these characteristics in your baby seek professional help. If you have additional questions, you can also write to us at [email protected]
